Expert summary
Buenos Aires is both the capital city and the largest city of Argentina. Despite being a prominent South American city, Buenos Aires is highly European in flavor. It was founded in 1536 by Don Pedro de Mendoza of Spain. Later in the 1800s the government made immigration a priority and because Buenos Aires is the main port of entry for Argentina this expanded the eclectic cultural character of the city. The 20th century saw additional immigration from Latin American countries which added to the cultural diversity of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is the political, financial, and cultural hub of Argentina.
